This is the first chord modification we’ll cover to begin the process of transforming your playing. It’s simple to learn, yet very effective to create a contemporary, professional sound.
By definition, the major 2nd chord is a major triad with the second note of its major scale included. A C major 2nd chord, for example, may contain all the notes in the C major triad – C E G with a D included. Major 2nd chords are written with a 2 in the chord symbol, eg. C2, D2, G2, etc. and are commonly referred to as the 2 chord.
But we don’t need to see a 2 chord appear on a chord chart before we play it. The 2 chord is one of the easiest chord modifications you can make when you see any major triad.

For those of you who already know what a 2 chord is, did you know it comes in two flavours? Most students, for example, play a C2 as C D G. Whilst this is perfectly acceptable, they never use the other, brighter option of C2 = D E G. Why not? Well, they just never knew it existed or could be done that way.
In this lesson, you’ll learn that the two variations of C2 have different qualities, uses and even their inversions can create slightly differing effects. It’s easy to learn, and will significantly improve the quality of your major chords. And the major 2nd chord, broken up into individual notes also produces some great runs and riffs.
In this video we demonstrate the above firstly in the key of C then we shift to the key of E. It includes 4 Worksheets with over 34 minutes of video footage. Great value for only $5.00!

Hi,
Can I know if the Major 2nd Chord is also known as the 9th?
Thanks!
The 2nd and the 9th are the same note, so adding the 2nd to your chord is the same as adding the 9th. However, a C9 chord also requires the addition of the 7th (in this case the flat 7th, Bb) which we don’t include when playing a C2. Similarly, a Cmaj9 chord requires the major 7th to be included, B.
Bonjour dans quelles leçons puis je trouver: ” Make your songs more “full”
Merci
CAFOUNIETTE
Hi Cafouniette, there isn’t a single lesson that deals with making your songs more full. The principles are spread over many lessons from Lessons 6 onwards with a lot of good examples at the end of Lessons 9 and 10. I hope I’ve answered your question correctly because I had to use Google’s translator tool understand french!
