If your idea of piano lessons involves a stern, prehistoric teacher telling you to play your scales, dismiss that image now. Sure we need scales, but music is to be enjoyed and so too are our piano lessons!

Each student is unique with different experiences, skills, and aspirations and we never forget this. Our lessons are tailored to help you achieve your goals and we proceed at a pace that best suits your learning.

How Much to Practise?

16 Jan 2010
Most of us lead busy lives. If you're a student, there are exams and assignments. As an adult, it's even tougher - work commitments, raising children, etc read more...

We keep our lessons enjoyable! For students of primary school age, there are games, challenges, competitions and prizes. For older students, there are no games and no prizes... sorry, but we still do have a good time learning some cool songs and laughing at our own mistakes. Remember, Quaverbox is a stress-free zone!

Whether you're 6 or 60, if you want to learn the piano and you have fingers, give us a call and we'll chat about your musical goals.

Lessons are tailored to your specific needs and goals, so the material we cover depend on your current experience and where you want to head. Topics include:

  • Chord Definitions & Modifications
  • Constructing RH Voicings
  • Rhythm Variation
  • Left Hand Rhythms & Patterns
  • Creating Chord Progressions
  • Playing Runs/Riffs
  • Intro to Blues/Jazz
  • Soloing
  • Playing by Ear
  • and much much more!

We cover a variety of improvisation styles ranging from contemporary piano and playing piano in the modern church worship environment to jazz and a bit of blues. If you have the occasional craving for a Bach prelude, we can cater for that too, so long as it's very occasional :)

Most new students begin by developing a strong note-reading foundation, tonal quality and expression. From there, depending on which genre of piano music you'd like to play, we adjust the focus, teaching the necessary skills for the appropriate area.

There is some overlap between styles and therefore you can learn everything if you wish! It might just take you a little bit longer
