We learnt the Dotted Crotchet Rhythm in Lesson 3. Now it’s time to beef it up! The Dotted Quaver Rhythm creates a contemporary, syncopated feel in both fast and slow songs. When used with a good mix of modified chords and filler notes, this rhythm really shines! You’ve already learned some basic modifications so in this lesson, I’ll introduce some ideas on how to choose good filler notes.
This lesson brings together all that we’ve covered so far in a neat and very versatile rhythm. There are lengthy examples in this video as I break it right down, explaining when each note is played and how each note is chosen. Included is a bonus practice video track that you can loop and play, helping you learn the dotted quaver rhythm.
The Essentials Course is completed with this lesson. This means by the end of this video, we would have covered all the necessary skills to improvise over any lead sheet or chord chart at a strong, basic level. Whether you can actually do this depends largely on how well you know your chords, their inversions, and modifications, so keep practicing!
The next series of lessons will focus entirely on creating melodies, runs, riffs, fills and patterns, much of which will use this rhythm, so it’s essential that you learn the dotted quaver rhythm well and all the stuff before it!
